Canopy radiation sensors:
The shielded Everest infra-red surface temperature sensor was mounted
horizontally facing the side of the cotton canopy looking due north.
David Gates and I discussed This deployment and decided that
this would best compliment his measurements.
The additional net radiometer is mounted ten centimeters above the soil
above the mid-morning shadow line.
This is to give a below canopy value.
- 3: RADIATION , Site none, Thu 11-Jul-1991 02:31:06 GMT, Additional radiation sensors:
Additional radiation sensors:
David Gate installed at the base of the prop tower additional
sensors to measure crop parameters.
They were two Vaisala relative humidity sensors with temperature, in
the canopy,
One Everest at 30 degrees angle down looking at the leaves,
and four leaf wetness simulation sensors.
All the data is recorded on their data logger.
We can obtain the data at the program end.

Radiation sensors need cleaning
For the last 3 days, the peak solar radition has been ragged at noon.
Three days ago, I also noticed spots on the sonic electronics boxes, which
indicates that the field was sprayed. (I later noticed the same spots on
the prop fins.) If it was sprayed, the upward-looking radiometer domes may
have been contaminated also. We need to get up there and look.

Canopy net radiometer leveled
It was out by about 1/2 of a bubble, rotated with the bubble to the west
(east side down). We "rolled" it (around a N-S axis) to get it level.
- 63: RADIATION , Site none, Sun 21-Jul-1991 17:39:41 GMT, Radiometers cleaned
Radiometers cleaned
All of the radiometers on the trellis were cleaned starting at 1000 local
(and Tom is going now to clean the net in the canopy) following our observation
that the field probably was
sprayed during the morning of July 18. To the eye, the cleaning did make a
difference. This explains why the last 3 days of radiation data showed irregularities
in the incoming signal. Other observations made at that time:
- the net is not level - it dips to the south (but we can't easily change this)
- the IR surface temperature looks straight down on the canopy. It is 250cm over
the ridge and 258cm over the furrows. The canopy is 68cm over the ridge, making
the IR surface temperature 182cm over the canopy.
- the downward-looking Epplys are 10 cm lower than the IR sensor

Non-solar light
There is a 3/4 moon tonight, which seems bright enough to
contribute incoming short-wave radiation.
Also, I have a light in the conditional sampler shelter tonight, though it
mostly illuminates the inside of the shelter. I do take it out to use the
Toshiba for about 2 minutes at the beginning of each flask filling session.

T.furrow & T.ridge:
Based on the irrigation today, we have
confirmed that the T.furrow and T.ridge sensors
are reversed. Since it is near the end of the
project, we will leave them as they are. A test
will be done at teardown to confirm this.

RADIATION DATA:
From ~20:35 to 20:50 gmt, the radiation
data has been played with trying to solve the
problem with the PAR sensor.
At ~21:10 gmt, the PAR signal was fixed. The problem
was due to a bad AD7510 switching chip on the amplifier
filter board.
